전시개요
올해 ‘동강사진상’의 주인공 변순철 작가는 시대적 · 대중적 문화를 반영하고 있는 인물들의 몸짓과 표정에서 시대적 문화와 현상 등을 미적인 작가의 눈으로 읽어내고 예술적으로 승화시키는 작업을 해왔다. 그의 초기작인 짝-패는 뉴욕의 다인종 커플들의 원초적인 삶의 모습 속에서 문화적 이질감과 소외, 젠더와 인종문제, 가족 해체 같은 시대적 변화가 준 충격을 증폭시켜 전달해 주었다. 작가는 귀국 후 전국노래자랑 프로그램에 참여한 참가자들의 모습을 통해 체면과 가식에 가리워져 있던 인물 본연의 솔직한 민낯을 포착하고 미학적으로 드러내는 프로젝트를 진행했다. 작가의 예술적 눈에 비친 우리들의 민낯은 천박하고 촌스럽지만 동시에 순박하고 순진하며 진정성을 가진다. 그의 작품은 우리 내면의 보편적 정서에 대한 익숙함과 낯설음을 재발견하게 해준다. 실향민을 소재로 한 <나의 가족> 시리즈는 과거 이미지의 시간의 흔적을 추론해 현재의 모습으로 재현하여 실향민과 그들의 가족을 조우하게 만드는 새로운 방식의 전시다.

Exhibition Overview.
The winner of this year’s DongGang Photography Award is Byun Soon Choel. Throughout his career, Byun has produced portrait images of the people in socio-culturally symptomatic situations. One of his early works Interracial Couple touches on the issues such as cultural clash, alienation, gender and racial issues, the failure of family as a social institution.
After returning to his home country, he made a photo series capturing the images of singing contest participants revealing their sheer passion that had been suppressed by external social norms. To Byun, our faces underneath social masks are what reveals the truth - however shallow or uncultured they may seem. Byun’s work reminds us that authentic emotions can seem both familiar and foreign at the same time. In Eternal Family, Byun digitally projects the imagined looks of the lost family members based on their old photos and reunites the families that had been separated by Korean War.
