올해 ‘동강사진상’의 주인공은 한국을 대표하는 다큐멘터리 사진가 박종우 작가다. 박종우 사진가는 일간지 기자로 근무하며 현대 사회의 다양한 현상을 취재한 이후 다큐멘터리 작가로서 세계 각지의 오지를 탐사하며 소수 민족의 문화와 생활을 기록해왔다. 현재 세계 여러 나라에서 국가 이데올로기에 의해 만들어졌지만 결국 쓸모없게 버려진 전쟁시설물을 기록하는 작업을 진행 중이다. 동강사진상 수상자전은 DMZ 시리즈 같은 지난 10년간 한반도 분단을 기록한 아카이빙 작업의 전반적인 소개를 포함하여 그가 30년 동안 펼쳐 온 작품 활동과 작품 세계를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 전시다.

The recipient of this year’s DongGang Photography Award is Jongwoo PARK, one of the most well-known documentary photographers in Korea. PARK started his career by working as a photojournalist at a daily paper, covering multiple facets of contemporary Korean society. After that, he has proceeded to document the culture and the lives of the ethnic minorities around the world as a documentary photographer. Currently, he is carrying out a project of documenting the abandoned war facilities across the globe which were created to serve the national ideologies but now have gone obsolete. The DongGang Photography Award Exhibition introduces PARK’s entire oeuvre of thirty years, including the archiving project of the division of the Korean peninsula that he has worked on for the past ten years, namely his DMZ series.

동강국제사진제의 대표적인 전시로 전 세계 사진 예술의 경향과 이슈를 중심으로 진행된다. 올해는 아카데미 시리즈 중 첫 번째로 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프(Kunstakademie Düsseldorf)를 다룬다. 1976년 독일 예술대학 처음으로 사진학과를 창설한 세계적인 아카데미로 현대 사진사에 한 획을 긋는 작가들을 배출하고 있다. 특히 독일 유형학적 사진의 토대를 마련한 베허 부부와 베허 학파라 불리는 현대 많은 작가들을 배출한 독일 사진의 근간이 되는 곳이다. 이번 전시는 독일 사진의 역사이자 전 세계 예술의 흐름을 주도하고 있는 베허 학파 작가들의 작품으로 구성하여 현대 사진의 흐름을 보여준다.

International Main Exhibition is the quintessential show of the DIPF that covers the most up-to-date issues of the photography world. The first of academy series is to come Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1976, Kunstakademie Düsseldorf has opened the first photography department in all of Germany’s art schools. It is a powerhouse of Germany and has many prominent photographers who marked the critical points in the history of contemporary photography. This exhibition epitomizes the history of modern and contemporary photography by the works of artists of Becher School who are the pillars of German photography and of the world.

국제공모전은 전 세계 사진작가들의 다양한 작품과 작품 세계를 통해 현대 사진의 현재를 공유할 수 있는 전시다. <꿈, 색을 입다(Colorful Dreamer)>라는 주제로 무한한 가능성을 품고 자신만의 색으로 다채롭게 꿈을 표현함으로써 다양하고 역설적인 꿈의 세계를 통해 꿈을 통한 성장과 꿈을 꿔야 하는 이유를 되새겨 본다. 올해는 61개국 4,881점이 접수되었다.

The International Open Call is an exhibition in which one can witness the “presentness”of contemporary photography through various works of photographers from all over the world. With this year’s theme “Colorful Dreamer,” presents a variety of dreams and their unlimited possibilities in a wide spectrum of individuality. Through diverse and paradoxical world of dreams, we get to remind ourselves of the reason why dreams are instrumental to personal and social growth. This year, the total of 4,881 works from 61 countries were submitted to the open call.

강원도사진가전은 강원도에 현주소를 두고 있거나 강원도 출신인 사진가를 대상으로 공모를 통해 진행된다. 강원도 사진계의 미래를 가늠할 수 있는 기회이자 강원도와 강원도민의 일상적인 삶의 기록을 통해 강원도의 과거와 현재, 미래를 이어주는 역할을 한다. 강원도를 잘 아는 만큼 지역 소재들을 삶 속에서 우러나는 재치로 재미있게 표현한 참신한 작품들을 선보인다.

영월군의 주요 거리를 오픈 갤러리로 변모시키는 공공미술의 개념을 도입한 동강국제사진제의 특화된 전시다. <영월향기>를 주제로 젊은 사진가의 창의적 사고와 독창적 시도를 통해 영월의 아름다운 자연과 진솔한 삶의 예술적 향취를 느낄 수 있는 설치 형식의 사진전이다.

동시대의 사회적 이슈를 찾아 국내외에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 보도사진가들의 주요 작업을 소개하는 전시이다. 올해는 <꿈의 세상, 하늘과 바다>를 주제로 자연 속 생명을 통해 바라본 자유의 숭고함과 인간의 소통을 생각해 보고, 자연을 배경으로 한 자유로움과 여유, 생명의 소중함을 취재하는 전·현직 사진기자들의 자연다큐사진을 전시한다.

The Photo Journalists’ Exhibition introduces the key works of the photojournalists who are actively pursuing both domestic and foreign social issues. 전국의 초등학교 학생들을 대상으로 아이들이 직접 찍은 일상의 사진과 그에 담긴 이야기를 공모를 통해 선정하여 전시한다. 초등학생의 일상과 아이들이 느끼는 감성과 감수성을 공유하는 전시이다.

Elementary Student Photo Diary Exhibition displays the selected works of Elementary school students that are chosen via the national open call process. The exhibit consists of daily photos and the short narratives that accompany them. This exhibition showcases the young students’ daily lives and their childlike sensibility.

Growing Up VII is an exhibition which displays the experimental spirit of the budding photographers who are learning photography at the lifelong education institutions. The nine participating photographers are all different: they differ in regards to how they got started in photography, the styles they are naturally drawn to, and how they go about their work. Their works depict the respective subject matter in various visual expressions and demonstrate their personalities through their creativity and the novel artistic approaches.

영월사진기행은 동강국제사진제 기간에 영월을 찾은 사진애호가에게 행복을 느낄 수 있는 여행과 촬영, 사진 전시회 관람, 문화 체험의 기회를 제공한다. 올해는 구름이 모이는 동네 ‘모운동’에서 고즈넉한 산골 풍경과 알록달록한 그림이 어우러져 마치 ‘동화나라’ 같은 마을을 배경으로 마을의 이야기를 사진으로 담아 전시한다.

Yeongwol Photo Tour program provides a unique cultural experience to the photo enthusiasts who visit Yeongwol during the festival. It offers a tour, photo workshops, gallery visits, and historical and cultural education all combined in a single package. The program will center around Moundong, the village that attracts clouds due to its high altitude. The participants will take photographs in this fairy-tale village that boasts its natural beauty and the colorful mural paintings. The tour will conclude in the form of an exhibition.

영월군민, 영월을 찾은 관광객을 대상으로 국내 유명 인물 사진가가 가족사진 촬영 교실을 진행한다. 가족사진에 대한 이해와 촬영 방법을 교육하며, 사전 참가를 접수한 가족들에게 인물사진 작가가 직접 가족사진 촬영, 사진 작품을 제작해 참여자에게 기증한다.
드림꾸러미 사진 공모전 <영월의 꿈과 희망>
(with 영월군청소년수련관)
사진 공모전을 통하여 영월 청소년이 적극적으로 지역문화 행사에 참여하고, 지역사랑을 고조시킴과 동시에 지역 문화홍보대사 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 시상 및 전시한다.
드론에 대한 관심이 크게 증가함에 따라 미래 희망인 청소년(초, 중, 고)을 대상으로 드론 사진 워크숍을 진행한다. 드론의 기초부터 장비의 이해, 촬영의 노하우를 배우며 새로운 시각으로 드론 사진 체험을 할 수 있게 기회를 제공한다.
영월 스토리텔링 공모전 <영월! 과거와 현재, 미래 사이>
영월을 배경으로 과거에 촬영한 사진을 골라 정확히 일치하는 장소에 찾아가 현재의 모습을 촬영한다. 과거와 현재의모습을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 기회를 마련하며 시간 속에 숨겨진 영월의 이야기들을 만날 수 있다. 예술적 사진보다는 평범한 주민의 눈으로 영월의 아름다움과 스토리를 알릴 수 있는 작품에 포커스를 맞추어 진행해 영월 군민들이 동강국제사진제에 직접적인 참여 기회를 제공한다.
