본 전시는 영월의 가장 상징적인 역사 문화 자산인 ‘단종문화제’의 변천사와 그 속에 담긴 군민들의 삶을 사진으로 담아낸 기록 전시이다. 반세기 가까이 이어온 단종문화제는 영월의 역사적 층위를 증명하는 살아있는 증거이자 지역 공동체를 하나로 묶어주는 거대한 문화적 흐름이다. 이번 전시는 오랜 시간 축제를 묵묵히 아카이브해 온 전문 촬영작가의 미학적 시선과 영월 군민들이 일상 속에서 직접 포착한 생생한 찰나를 결합하여 구성되었다.

전시는 크게 ‘대비’와 ‘공존’이라는 두 가지 시선으로 영월의 시간을 재구성한다. 빛바랜 필름 사진 속 어제의 단종문화제와 최신 디지털 카메라로 기록한 오늘의 단종문화제를 병치함으로써 축제의 변천사를 입체적으로 조명한다. 나아가 장엄한 전통 제례 행렬과 이를 즐기는 현대 관람객들의 모습 등 옛것과 새것이 아름답게 어우러지는 영월만의 독특한 문화적 역동성을 포착하고자 한다.

본 전시를 통해 사진이라는 매체에 담긴 단종문화제를 우리 모두의 서사로 확장하는 동시에 향후 영월의 정체성을 증명할 핵심적인 시각 자산으로 기록·보존하는 전기를 마련할 것으로 기대한다.

This exhibition is a photographic archive that chronicles the evolution of the Danjong Cultural Festival—Yeongwol’s most iconic historical and cultural asset—and the lives of the local residents intertwined with it. Spanning nearly half a century, the Danjong Cultural Festival is living proof of Yeongwol’s historical depth and a powerful cultural current that binds the local community together. This exhibition brings together the aesthetic gaze of professional photographers, who have silently archived the festival over the years, and the vivid moments captured by the people of Yeongwol in their daily lives.

The exhibition reconstructs the timeline of Yeongwol through two primary lenses: "Contrast" and "Coexistence." By juxtaposing the festival's past captured in faded film photography with its present recorded through modern digital cameras, the exhibition sheds light on the festival’s evolution from a multi-dimensional perspective. Furthermore, it captures the unique cultural dynamism of Yeongwol, where the old and the new harmoniously coexist—such as the majestic traditional ritual processions alongside the contemporary visitors enjoying them.

Through this exhibition, we hope to expand the narrative of the Danjong Cultural Festival preserved in these photographs into a collective story for us all. At the same time, we anticipate that this will mark a turning point in documenting and preserving these works as core visual assets that will define Yeongwol’s identity for generations to come.
