강원특별자치 도민과 영월 군민 여러분, 그리고 사진 애호가 여러분!
사진 문화에 대한 우리 모두의 열정이 담겨있는 <동강국제사진제>는 지난 2022년, 20년의 역사를 이루어내며 누구나 함께 참여하는 사진축제이자, 동시에 사진의 전문성을 특화하며 대한민국 대표 사진 국제행사로 굳건한 발자취를 확립하였습니다.
2023년 <제 21회 동강국제사진제>는 다음 세 가지에 방점을 두고, 더욱 새롭고 다채로운 기획으로 여러분 모두와 함께하고자 합니다. 첫째, 영월 군민 모두가 참여하고 함께 누리고 공감하는 사진 축제의 대중화, 둘째, 한국을 대표하는 국제 사진 축제로서 4차 혁명 시대를 선도하는 ‘국제화, 셋째, 법정 문화도시로 선정된 영월군의 역사와 문화, 그리고 자연 등의 종합 인프라를 통해 사진 문화예술의 전문화를 확장하고자 합니다. 이렇듯 동강국제사진제는 ‘청정 영월’을 대표하는 자랑스런 문화 콘텐츠 이자, 한국 사진의 탁월한 자긍심이 되었습니다. 올해의 동강국제사진제는 현재까지의 역사와 정통성을 충실히 이어가며, 동시에 현대예술의 융복합 트렌드를 반영한 사진의 새로운 지평을 열어 나가고 있습니다.
올해 <제 21회 동강국제사진제>의 <국제주제전>과 <국제공모전>에서는 현대사진의 다양한 확장과 사진의 미래를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 특히 김희정 수석 큐레이터의 진행으로 이탈리아 사진가 11명의 엄선된 작품들이 함께 선보이는 <Day to Morrow>는 국내에서 처음 발표되는 의미 있는 기획전으로, 이탈리아 사진 역사의 새로운 진수를 만나보실 수 있습니다. 국제공모전은 <Magical Unknowns>의 주제로 77개국, 6092 작품이 공모 되어, 최종 19명 작가의 작품 63점이 전시됩니다. 국내 외 사진가들의 특별하고 실험적인 작품들이 소개되며 사진 예술의 미래를 가늠해볼 수 있는 유익한 시간이 될 것이라 기대합니다. 국내 최고 역사와 권위의 <동강사진상>, 올해의 수상자로 선정된 윤정미 작가의 <동강사진상 수상자전>에서는 신선한 사진적 시각을 함께 체감할 수 있습니다. 그 외에도 강원특별자치도 사진가들이 참여하는 특별기획전 강원특별자치도 사진가전 <평행의 이행>, 사진으로 영월 군민들과 함께 소통하고 공감하기 위해, 영월군 주요 장소를 오픈 갤러리로 완성한 거리설치전 <영월찬미>, 국내 주요 언론 포토저널리스트들의 명작 사진들을 한자리에서 만나 볼 수 있는 <보도사진가전>, 영월 사진 문화의 지속적인 확장을 주도하고 있는, 영월 사진가들이 준비한 <영월군민사진전>, <동강국제사진제> 만의 독보적인 어린이 참여 전시 기획인 <초등학생 사진일기 공모전>과 청소년의 순수한 감성으로 강원특별자치도와 영월의 역사와 환경을 탐구하는, Green 다큐 프로젝트 <틴틴 포토>공모전, 영월 군민 상호 소통을 통해 새로운 가족사진 문화를 제안하는 <해피 패밀리 앨범>, 전국 주요 대학 평생교육원생을 대상으로 완성된 <평생교육원 사진공모전 Growing up X>, 그리고 ‘사진의 고장’ 영월 역사와 자연의 가치를, 국내 사진가와 여행 애호가들이 체험하고 기록하는 <영월사진기행>도 함께 선보입니다. 특히 올해, <제 21회 동강국제사진제>에서 새롭게 기획된 행사들도 눈에 들어옵니다. 한국 사진의 미래 주인공이 될 전국 대학 사진학과 학생 작품들을 전문가들이 리뷰한 후, 우수작을 전시하는 <전국 대학 사진학과 포트폴리오 리뷰>와 국내외 저명 포토저널리스트와 현장 토크를 통해 포토저널리즘의 안과 밖을 탐구하는 <포토저널리즘 워크숍>도 사진 문화를 이해하고 또 다른 가치를 경험하는 소중한 시간이 될 것입니다.
현대 사진 문화예술의 미래 가치를 위해 거듭나며, 사진 축제의 전통성을 계승하고 있는 <동강국제사진제>는 사진 문화의 진정한 의미인 배려와 소통을 함께 실천해 나가는 새로운 시도와 다채로운 기획으로, 지속적인 발전을 위한 변화의 노력을 경주해 나갈 것입니다. 항상 행사의 성공적 개최를 위해 책임을 다해 주신 동강사진마을운영위원회 위원들과 사무국 직원 여러분, 영월문화관광재단 여러분, 그리고 동강국제사진제를 한마음으로 널리 알려 주신 사진계 모든 분들과 언론계 여러분, 행사 준비에 깊은 관심과 큰 도움을 주신 최명서 영월 군수님과 문화관광과 직원 여러분, 그리고 군 의회 여러분, 특히 적극적인 행사 참여와 큰 성원을 보내주신 영월 군민 여러분이 함께 계셨기에 <제 21회 동강국제사진제>개최를 차질 없이 준비 할 수 있었습니다. 깊은 감사 인사를 드립니다. ‘문화 충전 도시’ 영월에서 열리는 <제 21회 동강국제사진제>에 여러분 한 분 한 분을 귀하게 모십니다.

A Forward to the 21th DongGang International Photo Festival
Dear esteemed residents of Gangwon State, Yeongwol County, and photography enthusiasts,
In 2022, the DongGang International Photo Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary, symbolizing our shared dedication to photography culture. Throughout its history, the festival has become a platform where individuals from all walks of life can engage and participate, while maintaining a high level of professionalism. It has firmly established itself as Korea's premier international photography event.
For this year's edition, the DongGang International Photo Festival, we prioritize three aspects: First, inclusivity for all Yeongwol residents to actively participate and enjoy the festival. Second, establishing our international presence as Korea's leading photography festival, embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. Lastly, leveraging Yeongwol County's cultural infrastructure to expand art and culture. With these priorities, we aim to create a memorable and impactful experience for all attendees. As such, the DongGang International Photo Festival has become a proud cultural content representing 'Clean Yeongwol' and an outstanding pride of Korean photography. It will continue to honor its history and authenticity while opening new horizons in photography that reflect the convergence of contemporary art.
The Main International Exhibition and International Open Call Exhibition offer a glimpse into the future of photography and the various expansions of contemporary photography. Day to Morrow, the main exhibition curated by Chief Curator HeeJung Kim, will feature selected works by 11 Italian master photographers which will be presented for the first time in Korea, showcasing the new essence of Italian photographic history. The International Open Call Exhibition <Magical Unknown> received 6,092 submissions from 77 countries, and 63 works by 19 selected artists will be on display. Very special experimental works by domestic and international photographers will be introduced, and it will be a time to gauge the future of photographic art. The DongGang Photography Award Exhibition, one of the most historic and prestigious photography awards in Korea, and this year's winner, JeongMee YOON, will showcase fresh and high-quality photography. The festival also features several special exhibitions that offer unique perspectives and experiences. Among them is the Gangwon State Photographers' Exhibition <Transition of the Parallels>, showcasing photographers from the Gangwon state. Another notable exhibition is the Street Installation Exhibition <In Praise of Yeongwol> which transforms key locations in the county into open galleries, fostering communication with the people of Yeongwol through photography. The Photojournalists Exhibition presents masterpieces by photojournalists from major Korean media, while the Yeongwol County Photographers Exhibition highlights the works of local photographers. There is also the Elementary Student Photo Diary Exhibition, a special program designed for children unique to the DongGang festival. The Teen Teen Photo, Yeongwol Photo Contest focuses on green documentary projects exploring the history and environment of Yeongwol and the Gangwon state from the innocent viewpoints of teenagers. The Happy Family Album proposes a new family photography culture through interaction between Yeongwol residents and local photographers.The Continuing Education Exhibition, Growing up X, provides a platform for continuing education students from major universities across the country to showcase their photography. Finally, the Yeongwol Photo Tour allows domestic photographers and travel enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the history and natural values of Yeongwol, known as the home of photography, and document their experiences.
The 21st DongGang International Photo Festival introduces exciting new programs this year. The Photo Portfolio Review provides a platform for students from photography departments across the country, who represent the future of Korean photography, to have their works reviewed by experts and subsequently exhibited. The DongGang Photojournalism Workshop offers on-site discussions with renowned photojournalists, exploring the intricacies of the field and enriching the photography culture of the festival.The DongGang International Photo Festival, dedicated to the future value of contemporary photography and culture, remains true to its authentic roots. Under the banner of consideration and experimentation, the festival continues to evolve through various plans, embracing continuous change. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the members of the DongGang Photo Village Operating Committee and the hardworking secretariat staff who have consistently fulfilled their responsibilities to ensure the success of the festival. I would also like to thank the folks at Yeongwol Culture and Tourism Foundation, as well as the entire photography community and media, Mayor MyungSeo CHOI and the dedicated staff of the Culture and Tourism Department of the County Office for their collective efforts in promoting the DongGang International Photo Festival. I would also like to express my appreciation to the members of the County Council. Above all, my sincere gratitude goes to the people of Yongwol, who actively participated in the event and provided tremendous support. We would like to express our deepest gratitude. We look forward to welcoming each and every one of you to Yeongwol, the county known for its abundant cultural offerings.
