Recipient of this year’s DongGang Photography Award, Nyung-man KIM started his career as a photojournalist at Dong-a Ilbo and he has since tirelessly accumulated remarkable bodies of photographic work that capture the volatility of Korea’s most turbulent times through his uniquely witty and satirical viewpoint. Now retired as a career photojournalist, KIM’s passion for photography hasn’t waned and he continues to work on his varying documentary projects. Nyung-man KIM has published twelve photo books including Hometown (1981), Humans and Humor (1991), PanMunJom (1993), Gwangju, That Day (1994), A Hometown of The Heart (1996), Portrait of the Times (2013), Men Who Became President (2022). He has also authored a photo essay book What is Presidency in 2002. Nyung Man KIM held over 20 solo exhibitions and is the winner of the Seoul City Culture Award(2003) and the Foreign Photographer Prize at Japan’s 21st Overseas Photographer Prize of Higashikawa International Photo Festival.

우리나라 사진계의 최고 권위와 역사를 자랑하는 ‘동강사진상’은 성실한 사진창작 활동으로 국내사진 발전에 기여하고, 한국사진을 해외에 널리 알린 국내 사진가에게 수여하는 상이다. 매년 사진계 전문가들의 엄정한 심사를 거쳐 수상자를 선정하며 동강국제사진제 기간 중 수상전이 개최된다. 올해 ‘동강사진상’의 주인공 김녕만 작가는 동아일보 사진기자를 시작으로 사회 현장에서 한국 격동기를 특유의 위트와 풍자가 섞인 독창적 시각으로 충실하게 기록했으며, 이후에도 다양한 사진기록 작업을 열정적으로 이어왔다. 그는 “고향”(1981), “유머가 있는 풍경”(1991), “판문점”(1993), “광주 그날”(1994), “마음의 고향”(1996), “시대의 기억”(2013), “대통령이 된 사람들”(2022) 등 12권의 사진집과 사진 산문집 ‘대통령이 뭐길래’를 펴냈으며 20여회의 개인전을 열었다. 2003년에 ‘서울시문화상’, 2005년에 제21회 일본 히가시카와(東川) 국제사진페스티벌에서 ‘해외작가상’을 받았다.

세계 사진예술의 경향과 이슈들을 중심으로 기획된 국제전은 동시대 사진의 흐름을 제시하고, 국내 사진 문화의 새로운 지평을 선도하고 있는 동강국제사진제의 대표 전시이다. 올해 전시는 미국 스트레이트 사진(Straight Photography)에 새로운 역사를 확립한 그룹 f. 64의 초기 멤버 11명의 작품 130여 점을 선보인다. 그룹 f. 64는 사진을 회화의 영역에서 분리시켜 하나의 예술 매체로서 새로운 형식을 만들어 사진 역사에 큰 획을 그었다. 이번 전시는 카메라의 기계적 특성을 최대한 활용하여 사진의 미와 사진가들의 순수성, 사실성이 극대화된 오리지널 프린트를 볼 수 있는 기회이다.

Main International Exhibition is an international exhibition that succinctly summarizes the core trends in contemporary photography. The exhibition has always stayed true to its name and comprised the backbone of the festival, pioneering the qualitative expansion of the Korean photography culture. This year’s theme is a photo collective of the early 20th century that has contributed immensely to the formation of American Straight Photography ‒ the Group f. 64. More than 130 works by 11 of the group’s early members will be on display. It is a rare opportunity to see the original prints of the legendary photographic works produced at a time when photography was establishing its independence from painting as an artistic medium.

세계 사진가들의 다양한 사진세계가 펼쳐지며, 현대사진의 정체성을 확인할 수 있는 기획전이다. 매년 다른 주제하에 최종 선정된 19명 작가의 다양한 작품들이 선보인다. 올해는 <Eureka! 일종의 계시>로 우리의 꿈은 끊임없이 지나치는 시간을 붙잡게 하며, 어느 순간 통제되지 않은 내면에서의 격렬한 지적 촉발을 일으킨다. 바로 유레카라는 외침이 터져 나오는 순간이다. 나의 깨달음과 기쁨은 무한히 복제될 수 있으며 누군가의 유레카의 방아쇠를 당길지도 모른다.

International Open Call Exhibition reveals the diverse makeup of its participating photographers and their varying styles, providing an interesting glimpse into the fabric of contemporary photography. The exhibition selects a fresh theme every year and twenty finalists are selected from the pool of open-call applicants. Our dreams help us grasp the time, then a violent intellectual outburst surges from our uncontrolled psyches. It is a Eureka moment, a moment of fresh insights and new connections. A longing for a new connection will take us to a puzzle of unknown interconnectivity. This state of enlightenment and the feeling of joy can be reproduced indefinitely and may very well trigger someone else’s Eureka moment.

강원도사진가전은 강원도에 현주소를 두고 있거나 강원도 출신인 사진가를 초대하여 진행된다. 강원도 사진계의 미래를 가늠할 수 있는 기회이자 강원도와 강원도민의 일상적인 삶의 기록을 통해 강원도의 과거와 현재, 미래를 이어주는 역할을 한다. 강원도를 대변하는 3명의 작가들은 그들의 애정과 탐구의 눈으로 강원도에 내재된 아름다움과 그 속에 살고 있는 생명들에게 주는 의미들, 그리고 강원도와 존재를 공유하는 사람들이 강원도에 대한 어떤 가치를 깨달아 가야 하는지를 그들만의 재치와 재미로 기록하였다.

The Gangwon Province Photographer’s Exhibition invites photographers who are either from Gangwon-do or currently residing in the province. This exhibition presents an opportunity to gauge the future of Gangwon-do’s photo scene and will, eventually, bridge the gap between the past, the present, and the future by casting light on the records that reflect people’s lives in the region. The three Gangwon photographers document the results of their photographic examinations on the intrinsic beauty and value of all living things in the province.

영월군의 주요 거리를 오픈 갤러리로 변모시키는 공공미술의 개념을 도입한 동강국제 사진제의 특화된 전시다. 영월은 하늘, 산, 구름, 바람, 강, 자연의 소리와 향기, 인간, 동물 등이 함께 조화롭게 어우러져 늘 자연적인 예술이 생산되는 곳이다. 진취적이고 창의적인 사고를 가진 젊은 사진가들에 의해 영월의 아름다운 자연과 진솔한 삶의 예술적 향취는 창의적이고 색다른 모습으로 그 진면목을 드러낼 것이다.
<영월산수>라는 주제로 진행되는 전시는 거리 설치 형식으로 진행된다. 전시된 작품들은 영월의 미학을 보여주는 결과이지만 동시에 설치된 작품 그 자체는 새로운 영월의 미학을 창조하는 재료가 된다.

Site-specific by design, the Street Installation Exhibition turns the streets of Yeongwol into a huge outdoors public art gallery. The nature-friendly town of Yeongwol inspires artists. The young and daring photographers will recreate the innate beauty of Yeongwol to the best of their creative abilities. Titled YEONGWOL SANSU, which roughly traanslate to Yeongwol Landscape, this exhibition will showcase the works that reflect the aesthetics of Yeongwol and the resulting aesthetics of the displayed works will contriute back to form Yeongwol's new aesthetics.

국내.외로 활동하고 있는 포토저널리스트들의 주요 작품들을 소개하는 전시이다. 현대 사회의 주요 이슈를 중심으로 동시대적 사회적 상황을 보여준다. 이제 세상은 아날로그의 시대는 끝났다고 말한다. 디지털이 중심이 되었고 인공지능, 가상현실과 함께 메타버스로 확장되고 있다. 그러나 이 순간, 시작을 잊고 길을 잃은 사람들이 많아지고 있는 것 또한 사실이다. 가만히 멈춰 서서 지금 하고 있는, 하고자 하는 일을 이해하고 있는지 생각할 때라고 생각한다. 아날로그 세상을 온몸으로 살아오며 사진기자의 전설로 남은 고명진(한국일보), 구자호(조선일보), 최재영(중앙일보)의 사진을 통해 끝났다고 여겨지거나 기억이나 추억으로 치부되는 지난 시대를 되새겨본다.

Photo Journalists Exhibition introduces the works of photojournalists who are actively delving into important social issues. It addresses many of the trending topics in our contemporary world and offers in-depth insights into today’s social landscapes, both domestic and abroad. People say that the analog era is finished: that the world we live in is successfully digitized and is expanding, as we speak, into a thing called metaverse that incorporates. There is no doubt that the world around us has changed. At the same time, however, the number of people who forgot their origins and feel lost are on the constant rise, too. Maybe it is time that we take a break, hold still, and ask ourselves whether or not we truly understand what we are trying to do. I look at the photographs of Myungjin GO(Hankook Ilbo), Jaho KOO(The Chosun Ilbo), and Jaeyoung CHOI(The JoongAng Ilbo) who have lived through the world of the analog and built reputations as legendary photojournalists.

DONGGANG MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY OUTDOOR EXHIBITION SPACE
전국 초등학교 학생을 대상으로 어린이의 순수한 시각으로 직접 찍은 일상의 사진이야기들로 구성된다. 공모와 심사를 통해 선정되며, 어린이들이 느끼는 감성과 감수성, 동심의 단편들은 잊고 있던 우리들의 안에 내재된 모습을 일깨워주는 전시다. 사진은 기록이면서 동시에 알게 모르게 자신과 우리를 발견해 가는 길이다. 아이들의 눈이 머물렀던 순간을 읽어가다 보면 그 속에서 과거 언젠가 우리의 눈이 머물렀던 순간들이 소환된다. 기획되고 의식하지 않고 카메라에 잡은 동심은 세상을 어떻게 표현하고 있는지도 궁금해질 것이다. 동심의 다년들은 잊고 있던 우리들의 모습을 일깨워 주고 관람자는 추억이라는 이름으로 그 모습들과 이야기를 풀어가는 시간을 갖는다. 그사이 나의 동심 이야기는 어느덧 내게 힐링을 선물할 것이다.

Elementary School Photo Diary Exhibition showcases the photo diary entries created by school children. These diary entries were selected from a myriad of submissions in a nationwide contest. Little fragments of funny ideas and child-like observations and sentiments will surely remind the viewers of their own childhood days. A photo is both a record and a path toward finding oneself. When we follow the children's vision, we arrive at a place where we once were as youngsters. seeing the world through a spontaneous and naive viewpoint is refreshing. it awakens the past that we have forgotten. The exhibition will a healing and self-reflecting journey into our own past.

감성이 메가트렌드로 부각되고 있는 시대에 맞게 사진에 얽힌 옛이야기를 통해 그 안에 담긴 추억을 느낄 수 있도록 전시함으로써 영월군민과 관람객의 감성을 자극한다. 영월 북면, 산솔면, 상동읍, 한반도면의 골목, 집, 동네 모습과 그 안에 담긴 소중한 이야기가 기록된 사진으로 기억하고 공유하고자 한다. 사진이 없다면 쉬이 공감할 수 없을 그때의 기억을 사진을 통해 공감하고 세대 간 공감과 소통을 나누는 시간을 선사한다.

Keeping pace with the spirit of the time where sensibility is gaining traction as a new cultural trend, Yeongwol Storytelling Exhibition is designed in such a way that the exhibited works summon the back stories hidden behind photos and maximize viewer’s nostalgic sentiments. The images of various places around Yeongwol, i.e. Bukmyeon, Sansolmyeon, Sangdong, the peninsula alley, and many more that are carrying layers of back stories will be exhibited for viewing. The fond memories from the past wouldn’t be so easy to share and discuss with others without the help of these photographs as visual guides. We hope this exhibition serves as a catalyst which

Growing Up IX is an exhibition which displays the experimental spirit of the budding photographers who are learning photography at the lifelong education institutions. The nine participating photographers are all different: they differ in regards to how they got started in photography, the styles they are naturally drawn to, and how they go about their work. Their works depict the respective subject matter in various visual expressions and demonstrate their personalities through their creativity and the novel artistic approaches.

Yeongwol Photo Tour Program made a collection of photos from a trip down Yeongwol, the city of history, tourism and relaxation. This program was designed to offer fans of photography visiting the town on the opening day of DIPF 2022 a chance to enhance their traveling experience through photography activity. It offers a tour, photo workshops, DongGang International exhibitions visit, and historical and cultural education all combined in a single package.

DONGGANG MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY DIGITAL GALLERY
영월군민을 대상으로 국내 유명 인물 사진가가 ‘가족사진 촬영 교실’을 진행한다. 사전 참가를 접수한 가족들에게 작가가 직접 가족사진을 촬영하고, 사진 작품을 제작해 전시한다.
In this extended program, a master portrait photographer will be teaching a class on how to take a good family photograph. For families that applied for an early submission, the instructing photographer will take a family photo for them which they will get to bring home.

2002년 제1회 동강사진축전을 시작으로 올해로 20주년을 맞이한 제20회 동강국제사진제는 그동안 축적된 자료들을 바탕으로 사진 아카이빙을 공개한다. 국내에서 가장 오래된 역사와 전통을 가지고 한국 사진문화의 발전과 대중화에 이바지한 동강국제사진제의 성장과정을 볼 수 있다.
Since its premiere in 2002, DIPF has become an international reference and allowed the local photographic culture to grow with it. This year, marking its 20th anniversary, the DIPF will organize and unveil for public viewing the massive photo archive it has accumulated over two decades. An embodiment of the festival’s rich history and tradition, this archive will show how DIPF has contributed to the growth and popularization of Korean photo culture.
